Speed Indicator Statistics from Lancashire County Council

An earlier post described a proposed SPID device for Wesham, details of which can be found on the following link:
http://weshamforum.blogspot.com/2007/12/speed-indicator-device.html

I now have statistical data which supports the effectiveness of such a device from LCC.

Lancashire County Council Actual Results of a Speed Indicator Device
The graph shown above indicates a site in Lancashire where a SPID was put into use over a 192 hour period. The percentage of roadusers exceeding the speed limit before the SPID was deployed can be seen to the left of the graph and similarly those exceeding the speed limit after the SPID was removed can be seen at the right of the graph. The centre of the graph clearly show a significant reduction in those exceeding the limit during deployment of the SPID.

Lancashire County Council's Conclusions:

1. THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE AND NOTICEABLE EFFECT ON DRIVERS WHEN THE SPEED INDICATOR EQUIPMENT BECOMES OPERATIONAL.

2. THIS EFFECT IS MOST NOTICEABLE ON THE PERCENTAGE OF DRIVERS EXCEEDING THE SPEED LIMIT.

3. THERE IS A SLIGHT RESIDUAL EFFECT AFTER THE EQUIPMENT IS REMOVED.

I'm all in favour of SPIDs the evidence is clear that they do slow down traffic and make roads safer.

I think the Town Council should move quickly to buy one to make our roads safer in Wesham. I also think we should look at at least two new polls for them to go on.

I've always supported the move to get our own and at the Council meeting on Tuesday I'll make that proposition.

I am pleased that Councillor Renwick you are in favour of the SPID. As, Simon, you did not attend the last Wesham Town Council meeting I think you should be aware that at that meeting I put a proposition which was unanimously carried, that a SPID is purchased and I was given authority by the TC to arrange for such a purchase in January. Therefore, you will not need to propose the purchase at the next meeting. I agree that we should be looking for additional poles to provide alternative locations. I have already put into place arrangements with LCC to consider such sites. As you should already know myself and Cllr Theresa McCardle have already received, from LCC, authority to install and maintain the device following our successful training course at Lancashire Police HQ.

I,m pleased that Wesham Town Council can act together on this. Well done. Perhaps further cooperation can be forthcoming.
